"Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge
Named one of the top ten birding spots in this nation, the J. N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge encompasses over 5,200 acres. Five-mile Wildlife Drive winds through mangrove forest and tidal flats making wildlife watching accessible to everyone. The lands are preserved, restored and maintained as a haven for indigenous and migratory wildlife as part of a nation-wide network of Refuges administered by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Old Town Sanibel
Just footsteps to Gulf & Bay world famous shelling beaches, stroll to quaint village shops, grocery, deli and one of the island's best breakfast and lunch cafés. Sanibel Historical Village and Museum
This small village-type museum features displays and exhibits that explain the history of the turn-of-the-century residents of Sanibel Island, as well as the Calusa Indians and the island's Spanish period. The museum features five historic buildings including a period Sanibel cracker style house which originally belonged to Clarence Rutland, an island resident and assistant keeper of the lighthouse in 1916. Sanibel Lighthouse
The most frequently photographed aspect of Sanibel Island, this historic lighthouse is located on Sanibel Island's southern tip and has been a landmark since the entire island was a nature preserve. Visitors to the lighthouse can also enjoy a picnic, strolling on the beach, or fishing from the pier. East end of Sanibel, public parking at the beach at east end of Periwinkle Way. First lit in August 1884. Since 1950, the U.S. Coast Guard property at the lighthouse has been a wildlife refuge. Learn more »
